Endoscopy means looking inside and typically refers to looking inside the body for medical reasons using an instrument called an endoscope. Endoscopy can also refer to using a borescope in technical situations where direct line-of-sight observation is not feasible. OverviewEndoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic medical procedure that is used to assess the interior surfaces of an organ by inserting a tube into the body. The instrument may have a rigid or flexible tube and not only provide an image for visual inspection and photography, but also enable taking biopsies and retrieval of foreign objects. Endoscopy is the vehicle for minimally invasive surgery and patients may receive conscious sedation so they do not have to be consciously aware of the discomfort. Many endoscopic procedures are considered to be relatively painless and, at worst, associated with moderate discomfort; in esophagogastroduodenoscopy, for example, most patients tolerate the procedure with only topical anaesthesia of the oropharynx. Complications are rare but can include perforation of the organ under inspection with the endoscope or biopsy instrument. If that occurs open surgery may be required to repair the injury. It will almost knock you out. I felt a small tube going down my throat, and i gagged for split second, then I woke up, went back to sleep, woke up again, and my friend was there to take me home. By the time I got home, I thought I was completely awake and was going to clean up, but ended up sleeping all day. it was the best sleep ever!! Good Luck, it was very easy. a little scary, but easy. From the time I left home, until the time I got back was about 2 hours. Answered by nil8_360 - Mon Jul 13 20:52:10 2009 What were your instructions on what to eat after an endoscopy and colonoscopy?
Q. What were your instructions on what to eat after an endoscopy and colonoscopy? Asked by Teresa - Thu Aug 7 20:41:45 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. It depends on what the doc found. If there were polyps, a low fiber diet for a week, then a high fiber diet. If you have diverticulosis without polyps (they are removed during the procedure) you need to start the fiber right away. Always drink lots of decaffeinated beverages, as the prep dehydrates your body. For bowel health, try to eat 25 to 30 grams of fiber per day fyi- the average american eats only 10 - 15 grams of fiber per day.
