How can I get my cat to stop chewing electrical cords?
Q. I have two cats, they both have the same diet, attention, etc. "Chewy" chomped into my computer cords and also goes after my leather purses - but only if I'm not looking. He also tears his toys to shreds. He's a 5 yr old Ragdoll. My other cat never bothers anything. I adopted him 3 months ago - and the previous owners KNEW of his bad habit and didn't tell me! Other than that he is very sweet. He's declawed so I can't toss him outside. I keep these things away from him, but I also discovered he can open doors by himself!

A. Spray the cords with bitter apple spray! You can find it at Walmart or a pet store, it's cheap too!

How do you get a cat to stop chewing electrical cords?
Q. He seems to like the skinny cords like a phone charger or a phone line. Can't tell you how many computer mouse cords he's eaten. Doesn't matter if the cord is plugged into the wall or not - he still chews them. I have to replace my cordless phone now. It starting to get expensive! He's only 2 years old. His sister doesn't touch them just him. He mostly does it at night or when no one is around... to be found later. No he's not Siamese - just a grey tiger...

A. Have you got on to him for it? Cats are like kids, when your home watch him and if he so much as gets within 5 inches of a cord, pick it up show it to him and pop him on the butt and tell him no. It's worked for me and my cats. If you see him chewing on it pop him on the butt with the cord, not hard though just enough to get his attention. Let him know that you own him not the other way around.

How do I stop a 10 mo. young cat from chewing electrical cords?
Q. This cat loves to chew the cords into many pieces.
Asked by jitter - Sun Mar 26 02:02:06 2006 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Your first step is to check all cords to make sure there have been no breaks in the integrity of the insulation. If any spot seems chewed or frayed, replace the entire cord immediately. Reduce temptation by securing cords to table legs and baseboards. You can find electrical cord covers at your local home improvement store that attach to baseboards. You can also bundle computer cords inside PVC pipe. Cut a lengthwise slit in the pipe and squeeze the cords through. All cords that you can't secure should be coated with a bitter anti-chew preparation, available at pet supply stores. Use disposable gloves when applying it, because it truly does taste bitter!

Q. My cat chews on electrical cords i.e. cell phone chargers, the power cord to the ps2, earphones, etc. She is becoming impossible to live with.

A. No home with pets should be without Bitter Apple Spray. You can get it in Petco or Petsmart. It works great to stop them from chewing on cords. If that doesn't work, then you might need the heavy duty plastic tubes to run the cords thru.

How do I get my 7mo old puppy to stop chewing electrical cords!!?
Q. He's chewed all my Christmas lights, game controls, heating pad, extension cord. I'm afraid he's going to get electricuted!

A. And you are right to be concerned. I had the same problem with a number of pets. You're probably already doing this, but you'll want to keep the cords out of puppy's reach. Someone suggested running the cords through PVC pipes. One thing I did was yell EVERY time I caught one of my pets chewing a cord. I made sure they knew that cord-chewing was absolutely forbidden, and that they would get their butts spanked if I caught them at it. Now, at 7 months old, your puppy is probably teething. Try getting him things that he can chew on, such as nylon bones. good luck!

A. If the cat chewed threw the insulation on the cord you should replace the cord. The bitter spray works for some cats, it didn't work for mine. I had to find a way to hide the cords under the lamps or behind something until they out grew that phase.

A. Yeah, I think there are hard tubes with lengthwise slits down one edge so they can be slipped over the cords. They may be called "cord organizers" or "cord covers" because they're supposed to solve the dilemma of too many cords making the room look like an electrical junk yard. Call around to the hardware stores & pet supply stores to see if they have the cord covers. They may be with baby safety items because babies & toddlers chew on everything. Otherwise, call your vet for a recommendation for a source. The receptionist may be able to relay your question & get an answer back to you either directly or left on your machine or voice mail. Q. This kitten is getting older now but he is insane! I ordered a chew protector thing that cats don't like to cover some cords, but I can't cover every exposed wire in the house! I'm afraid he's gonna electrocute himself and set my house on fire! I feel bad keeping the cat penned in one room while my other cat and dog are fine in the house.

A. Hi there, what your cat is doing is a condition referred to as "PICA", which is where cats either eat weird things or suck on fabrics, especially wool, as if they are nursing. This is usually caused by a kitten being weaned from its mother too early. And obviously, as you already know, can turn into a big problem and cause medical gastro-intestinal problems for the cat. If you cannot cover or tape down the wires, then you will have to use something that smells or tastes bad to the cat. It is true cats do not like the smell of citrus fruits. You may want to leave citrus peels near your wires, or even spray them with a sugarless juice such as unsweetened lemon or lime juice. There is also a commercial product you can try called Bitter… [cont.]

How do you keep your dog from chewing through electrical cords?
Q. Holly is three months old, and she has plenty of chew toys. In the past week I've had to re-wire a lamp and replace my vacuum cleaner, and now she's just killed the computer speakers I haven't had for even a full day yet. She does this at night while I'm asleep, so I don't catch her in the act. Also, it's getting harder to keep things out of her reach, since she's growing, and things on the tables, beds, and shelves are not necessarily safe any more. Any suggestions for puppy proofing my house? Thank you.

Cat chewing on electrical cords, how do I make him stop?
Q. Our male cat is a biter and he does all sorts of bad things to get our attention. At 5 am he'll come into the bedroom and knock things off the night stand or dresser to wake us up. He'll do the same thing in the kitchen. He'll bite any exposed skin to wake me up or for attention. And lately he's started chewing on things. He opens my jewelry box ( No clasp on the box) so he can chew on necklaces. But more importantly he chews on electrical wires. My Fiance and I plug our phones into the same outlet. Twice he's chewed though my cell phone charger cord. Thank God he wasn't hurt. What really makes me mad is my Fiance's cord is left untouched. Today I found bite marks on my lap top cord and the plastic cut a little bit. What I don't… [cont.]

A. Hate isn't part of it, it's the 'mouth feel' to the cords. Take 1/4 cup of liquid dish washing soap and add two tablespoons of water to it. Dip your fingers in it and coat the wires thickly with this. A mouthful of dish soap usually stops the chewing. It'll dry on the cords and work long term.

A. there are some sprays you can buy at petsmart that are supposed to leave a bitter taste in the dogs mouth and make them not want to experience that taste again so after it gets that taste in their mouth they should stay away from whatever you spray it on.

How can I get my cat to stop CHEWING cords?
Q. My cat has a nasty habit of chewing electrical cords, or anything thats stringy in general. I'm sure he's been shocked a few times because of this. He has chewed up my roommates ipod earphones, phone charger, my phone charger, and last night, MY ipod earphones!!! I don't understand, I yell at him and lightly spank him on his nose and he acts like he understands- he lays down and acts all submissive towards me, but he still does it. I love him to death, but he's so mischievious and he's driving me nuts. I have to pay $50 to replace my earphones!!! How can I get him to stop chewing before I come home to an electrocuted cat? (sorry, had to throw that in there)

A. Aaarrggh! I totally know what you mean! One of mine chewed through my computer keyboard cord, 2 cell phone rechargers cords, my Swiffer Vac recharger, one of my computer's speaker cords (so now I only have 1) and numerous other things. I got a product called Bitter Apple from the pet store. I found it in the dog section. It comes in a spray or a gel. I got the gel and rubbed it on all my cords. He tried to chew my cell phone cord (again!) and got a bit of a surprise- a yucky taste in his mouth that made him change his mind about eating yet another cell phone cord!

A. Apparently she has demonstrated to you that she cannot be trusted to have the run of the house yet when you aren't home (too much freedom!). I would recommend you invest in a crate or baby gate her in a "doggie-proof" room. I would not only do this for your sanity, but also for her safety. Usually a destructive dog is a bored dog. You need to tire this girl out before you leave with a good 45 minute walk each morning. Also, I would suggest you invest in some good chewies to keep her occupied. Kong's are a favorite. I also recommend Nylabones and Natural Bones. Yelling at her will not work. Not only will she be scared of you... but unless you are actually catching her in the act of destruction... punishment will not do anything.… [cont.]

A. If the animal repellant won't work like one person suggested, take a bar of fragrant soap, Irish Spring is the strongest that I know of, & rub it on the cord(s). Just lightly though. I did this when I brought home my cat & she was chewing on every cord in sight. It was a bit of a pain to get to all the cords but I enlisted my son to crawl in spots I couldn't reach. The scent of the soap kept her away.

A. How bout a stern NO and a squirt in the face with a spray bottle of water?? Obviously it's best if you'd do this when he got close to it, rather than after he's started chewing! ;-)

Why does my cat chew on electrical cords when she has her own cat toys?
Q. My cat Harmony has this thing for chewing thru power cords, phone cords, phone chargers, mouse cords, et al. She ate thru my flashlight charger this morning, so I bought a new one today. I had the new one in my room all of 5 minutes when she chewed thru it. I didn't even have time enough to put the cord in the plastic "cord protector" I bought today. What is wrong with her?! Why does she do this? (BTW. She is 8 years old... no kitten here. She's always done this.) (She has food whenever she wants it in her feeder too.) She loves to attack the cords like prey. She has plenty of toys that stimulate the attack/prey behavior. What else would you recommend? Denise

A. i would put two sided tape or a cat repellent spray on the cords, before she gets killed. and buy some thick boot laces, tie to a table and lie on the floor for her to chew on. why do they do it? to annoy us.
