A. It smells like ammonia because ammonia is a big componant in urine. A UTI may change the way your urine smells, this is normal. It may also cause your urine to become cloudy or bloodstained. UTI can also make it sore when you go to the toilet, or make you feel like your really need to go but nothing comes out. There are things that can change the way your urine looks or smells without infection, such as eating certain foods, being dehydrated or hormonal changes associated with your period. Some women suffer from UTIs regularly and they're not that serious. I would see the doctor again, who can tell you straight away if you have an infection by dipping a test strip in your urine. Just remember that urine smell changes all the time, and… [cont.]

How do I reduce the ammonia smell in my cat's urine?
Q. I have 2 cats, clean their litter daily, and use clumping litter. I realize that their urine just stinks from ammonia. A. Hi, urine odor is generaly related to the volume and concentration of chemicals excreted by your kidneys. Normally, urine will not have a strong odor of any sorts, but if you are dehydrated then your urine becomes much more concentrated, and it can have a strong ammonia [ urea broken down ]smell as in your case. You have already excluded urinary tract infection so this is my best guess.Hope it helps

why do my urine smell like ammonia?
Q. my underware/urine smells of a fresh bottle of strong ammonia. This happens once a month for 2 days, then it's gone. I always drink plenty of water. I don't have a bladder or urinary infection because I have a chemical urinalysis and microscopic done on my urine. My husband agrees with me about the this very strong smell.

A. It may not be your urine that you are smelling. It may be discharge. Your discharge changes throughout your cycle. I would guess that the change , if it is every month for 2 days, is happening around the time of ovulation. However, if you have any concerns I would go see a doctor to rule out any other sort of infection. Drinking cranberry juice flushes out the bladder and helps to prevent infection as does yogurt help to prevent yeast infections.

My dog has always had really smelly urine--very strong ammonia smell.?
Q. Recently the smell of his urine has gotten worse, but it smells completely different. It's a very strong pugnant odor and the color of his urine is very dark yellow, sometimes almost brown. His diet hasn't chaned any and he is an inside dog--no chance he got into anything he shouldn't have outside. Any idea what may be causing this? My dog has access to water all day long, so I can't see it being an issue of dehydration. He also uses puppy pads while he is home alone during the day in case he needs to potty while I'm not home. It's a really strange situation since he has free access to water all day and he doesn't have to hold his pee for long periods of time.

A. hello! I have two dogs, and I have experienced the same thing.. aside from getting a special pet odor remover, I use warm water and white vinager. the vinegar kills the odor and cleans the carpet naturally. just use equal parts and let it sit for a minute. try sprinkling baking soda on the mess and letting it sit before you use the vinegar water solution... vaccum it up then put the solution on. hopefully that works.

Does urine contain ammonia?
Q. The reason I ask is that I know a lot of us clean up bedwetting and potty training accidents, as well as pet messes, with bleach. If bleach and ammonia are a deadly combination, I wonder if this is really a safe thing to do. Not trying to be gross...but urine definitely smells like ammonia, if it isn't the exact substance that offgasses with bleach, it must be something very close in chemical composition.

A. Urine most definitely contains ammonia [so does poop!] I rarely use bleach so I have no idea whether it really does produce the poisonous gas you would theoretically expect. [Though sometimes urine alone can smell pretty deadly!] For the urine odor on your bed linens and other machine washables, put plain white vinegar into your washing machine's fabric softener dispenser. The vinegar neutralizes the urine, eliminating the smell. [A bonus: no fragrances, VOCs, or allergens.] You may want to set your washer to rinse two times to completely remove the vinegar smell. Since you are apparently the mom of a young'un, you also might as well get used to adding a scoop of Oxi-Clean to every load. Found a terrific sight [referenced below] re: using… [cont.]

A. Sounds like the PH levels are off in your body following your period. In your case, you become more acidic, thus the ammonia smell. You can neutralize the acidity by introducing more base-type foods in your body - Yogurt, low fat milk and plenty of water.
