why do my urine smell like ammonia?
Q. my underware/urine smells of a fresh bottle of strong ammonia. This happens once a month for 2 days, then it's gone. I always drink plenty of water. I don't have a bladder or urinary infection because I have a chemical urinalysis and microscopic done on my urine. My husband agrees with me about the this very strong smell.
Asked by sunshine - Thu Mar 1 05:32:05 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It may not be your urine that you are smelling. It may be discharge. Your discharge changes throughout your cycle. I would guess that the change , if it is every month for 2 days, is happening around the time of ovulation. However, if you have any concerns I would go see a doctor to rule out any other sort of infection. Drinking cranberry juice flushes out the bladder and helps to prevent infection as does yogurt help to prevent yeast infections.

Q. my four year old daughter has a very strong ammonia smell in her urine, real bad. I read up a little bit and i found that it could be that she is dehydrated but she has been going pee a lot and not just in small amounts. could she still be dehydrated or could it possibly be something else?? what could it be?
Asked by Rachel O - Tue Oct 7 23:47:37 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It could be any number of problems. Go ahead and take her to the doctor tomorrow. They may have your daughter pee in a cup to get a urine test. She may need a blood test too. :p Best case scenario: It is just a urinary tract infection or bladder infection. Worst case scenario: Diabetes or kidney issues. Don't panic. Just see the doctor. Whatever it is, you want to catch it early.

Q. I have never had this happen. The last 2 days my urine has had a really strong ammonia smell. I am a very clean person. I'm married so i don't have multiple sex partners. This week is when I am supposed to be ovulating. i don't know if that has anything to do with it. I have also been using an ovulation kit because we are trying to get pregnant but it still hasn't detected the Lh surge. i don't feel like i have a uti or kidney infection. The only symptom i have is the smell. Serious answers only please. I know its ammonia but it is a VERY strong chemical smell

A. Because your urine IS ammonia! You're probably dehydrated so it's just very concentrated. Try drinking a ton of water today and see if it's still happening.

Q. Hello All - I don't know why my urine has this strong amonia (almost bleach like?) smell to it? Has been for the last couple of days. I am about 3 days late for my period, could this be connected? This can sometimes be a sign that you are with child because i am 13weeks and i had a change in the smell of my urine also so maybe you can take that test and also have regular intake of water that would help the smell go away at times its a way that our body try letting us know that its thirsty. Neutralising urine/ammonia smell?
Q. One of my horses wees a lot (no medical problem, he just does!) and as a result his stable smells a bit. He is turned out through the day and his stable is fully mucked out every day. However, the rubber matting gets wet with urine. What will neutralise the odour? I'm looking for something I can use on a day to day (or week to week) basis, and something natural. I take his mats up and pressure wash with disinfectant regularly but I obviously cannot do this every day. Will lemon juice, white vinegar etc help (all the usual natural neutralisers!?)? A. Hi, try adding a little epsom salts/ magnesium sulphate to your horses hard feed, its cheap and you dont have to do it every day, just say twice a week or so, it neutralizes the ammonia in the urine so helps stop the smell. Hope this helps Tanya xx :-) xx

A. Vinegar! Put about 1/2 cup of vinegar mixed with 1 and a half cups of water together, in the sink, an empty spray bottle, etc. Take a clean rag and either soak it with the vinegar/water mixture in your sink, wringing it out some, or spray directly on the spot and scrub it in. It will neutralize the ammonia smell and also deter your pet from using that spot again. A tip we received from our Vet. when we had that problem! He was right, it work's.

A. I don't know if it is normal for most women, but I had exactly what you were talking about when I was pregnant. Some days were better than others but I could hardly stand the smell. My doc checked and all was healthy and I delivered a heathly baby at 41 weeks, so from my experience, don't worry :)

Does urine contain ammonia?
Q. The reason I ask is that I know a lot of us clean up bedwetting and potty training accidents, as well as pet messes, with bleach. If bleach and ammonia are a deadly combination, I wonder if this is really a safe thing to do. Not trying to be gross...but urine definitely smells like ammonia, if it isn't the exact substance that offgasses with bleach, it must be something very close in chemical composition.

A. Urine most definitely contains ammonia [so does poop!] I rarely use bleach so I have no idea whether it really does produce the poisonous gas you would theoretically expect. [Though sometimes urine alone can smell pretty deadly!] For the urine odor on your bed linens and other machine washables, put plain white vinegar into your washing machine's fabric softener dispenser. The vinegar neutralizes the urine, eliminating the smell. [A bonus: no fragrances, VOCs, or allergens.] You may want to set your washer to rinse two times to completely remove the vinegar smell. Since you are apparently the mom of a young'un, you also might as well get used to adding a scoop of Oxi-Clean to every load. Found a terrific sight [referenced below] re: using… [cont.]

Ammonia smelling urine in toddler?
Q. My 21 month old daughter just got over a cold. Now her urine smells like ammonia. It is a very strong smell. Is that a UTI? She does not have a fever, it does not seem like she is in pain when she urinates so I don't know what is going on. I am going to call her doctor but it is their lunch break. What could make her urine smell like this? I'm sorry I don't think that is normal. Throughout her whole life I have never smelled urine that smelled that bad!!!

Anybody have a remedy to get rid of cat urine smell?
Q. My mother in law has like 6-7 cats and a few of them have been peeing and spraying (they are all fixed and still spray) in their house but also outside. We know how to get rid of the smell from the carpets inside...but what about outside? When you stand at her side porch all you smell is that nasty ammonia smell!
Asked by armywife - Tue May 29 17:04:32 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments
A. To get rid of the smell outside, cut up lemons, limes, oranges and place them in the smelly areas. Cats don't like the smell and will avoid those areas. Also, the citrus fruit will decompose over time so you don't have to worry about cleaning it up. When the smell returns, add more fruit.

A. To get rid of the smell outside, cut up lemons, limes, oranges and place them in the smelly areas. Cats don't like the smell and will avoid those areas. Also, the citrus fruit will decompose over time so you don't have to worry about cleaning it up. When the smell returns, add more fruit.

A. It is perfectly normal for it to have an ammoniacal smell as it does indeed contain ammonia. However if there is a strong smell, it indicates a poor fluid intake and a concentration of the urine. It is true that a few diseases (mainly of the kidneys) can cause it, but without further symptoms, I suspect it is simply a concentration...encourage the child to drink more fluids...juices, water, but I discourage sodas and sweet drinks.
